How to plan a family quiz night in 30 minutes

  1. Minutes 0–5: welcome and practice. First, explain how to answer and try one easy question together. Pair younger children with someone who can help them read.
  2. Minutes 5–12: an easy opening round. Choose six questions from the first list below. Allow thinking time before anyone reveals an answer.
  3. Minutes 12–20: a mixed-age challenge. Next, use six questions from the second list. Read each question aloud so reading speed does not decide the result.
  4. Minutes 20–27: make it personal. Add three questions about shared memories, family traditions or familiar objects.
  5. Minutes 27–30: finish together. Finally, reveal the answers and invite everyone to share their favourite moment.

If you use paper, award one point for each correct answer and keep the scoring simple. For digital play, rehearse the scoring settings in advance. If you want people to share a device or compete as teams, confirm that your chosen setup supports that format.

12 easy family quiz questions with answers

Start with questions that give younger players confidence. For example, offer two or three answer choices if the group needs a little help.

  1. How many sides does a triangle have? Three.
  2. Which animal has a long trunk? An elephant.
  3. How many days are in a week? Seven.
  4. What do bees make from flower nectar? Honey.
  5. Which planet do we live on? Earth.
  6. What is frozen water called? Ice.
  7. How many legs does a spider have? Eight.
  8. Which season comes after spring? Summer.
  9. What is five plus seven? Twelve.
  10. Which shape has four equal sides and four right angles? A square.
  11. What is the name of the star at the centre of our Solar System? The Sun.
  12. How many minutes are in an hour? Sixty.

12 questions for a mixed-age family challenge

Then, mix subjects so one specialist does not dominate. These questions are a starting point: choose the ones that suit your guests.

  1. Which is the largest planet in our Solar System? Jupiter.
  2. Which ocean is the largest? The Pacific Ocean.
  3. What is the capital of Japan? Tokyo.
  4. How many sides does a hexagon have? Six.
  5. What is half of three quarters? Three eighths.
  6. Which gas do plants absorb during photosynthesis? Carbon dioxide.
  7. Which chemical element has the symbol Au? Gold.
  8. What is the smallest prime number? Two.
  9. Which instrument usually has 88 keys? A piano.
  10. Put these lengths in ascending order: one metre, one centimetre, one kilometre. Centimetre, metre, kilometre.
  11. Which is a mammal: a dolphin or a shark? A dolphin.
  12. How many degrees are in a right angle? 90.

Add a birthday or family reunion round

A personal round makes the evening feel like yours. However, use memories that most guests can recognise, and avoid embarrassing stories or private information.

  • A familiar place: show a holiday photo and ask where it was taken. Check the answer with the person who took it.
  • A favourite tradition: ask which dish usually appears at your family celebration. Agree on the answer beforehand.
  • A birthday detail: ask the guest of honour to approve three friendly facts for a birthday quiz.
  • A picture puzzle: show a close-up of a familiar household object and ask everyone to identify it.

In addition, let guests suggest one question before the event. Keep a few spare questions in case a round feels too easy or too difficult.

Family quiz night questions and answers

How many questions should I prepare?

For this 30-minute plan, choose twelve general questions and three personal ones. Keep the remaining questions as backups. If discussion runs long, shorten the final round.

Can children and adults play together?

Yes. Mix easy questions with harder ones, read them aloud and give younger players help with reading. Above all, choose topics that suit the people in the room.

Is hosting an OrQuiz event free?

Creating quizzes is free and unlimited. Hosting your event requires a paid activation. You can test your own quiz with up to 3 players for free.

Can I use these questions for another group?

Yes. For a lesson, see our classroom quiz games guide. For colleagues, use our team building quiz plan.

Try your quiz before you pay

You can test the quiz you created with up to 3 players for free. Players see the questions on their own screens. Everyone joins in a browser, so there is no app to download.

When does an activation use credits?

A standard smartphone or computer game costs one credit: $24.99 including taxes. The system uses the credit when you move from question 5 to question 6 with at least 4 players. Credits are not tied to a specific quiz, so you can buy them before or after creating your game.

Credits normally remain valid for six months from purchase. Current discounts for packs of 1–10 credits appear inside the purchase screen. For larger packages and their validity periods, contact OrQuiz.

If a game is interrupted, you can resume from where you stopped. Starting again requires another credit. The host controls when everyone moves to the next question. You can even host from a phone, although a computer is more comfortable.
